March 12, 2012 Email

Dear Mom and Dad,
Here's an interesting experience.
I felt like I should memorize Joseph Smith's First Vision in English. I've never, ever needed to recite it, so I felt no need. I have it memorized in Chinese, of course, but I felt like learning it in English would be a good experience. I did so, and about a day or two later, we met a really cool Phillipino guy named James. He could speak a little bit of Chinese, but Phillipino's English is all really good. He has been having some difficulties here in Taiwan, and is looking for comfort. I was able to share the First Vision, in English, and my companion was able to testify that God answers our prayers. It was very powerful, and he was touched by the message we shared with him. I am grateful that I am a tool in the Lord's hands, and that as I learn the things that He wants me to, He is able to use them when they are most needed.
Huang Yi Kai is doing well. He needs a second interview because of some past transgressions, but he has a wonderful testimony of the Atonement. He really wants to change. They announced his baptism in church, everyone is pretty happy about it. This is the first Brother to be baptized in the ward since July. There will be more.
My companion is doing great, Elder Powell has a great testimony, and he wants to share it with everyone. I love him, and I'm grateful to serve with him. I understand what you mean, sometimes he asks funny questions, or follows me closer than is needed. But then again, I was probably the exact same way. I think its better than him not asking any questions, or disappearing into the middle of Yuanlin.
Man, Braidyn is adorable. He has really big eyes! But what color are they? They look green, which is interesting. He looks really shuai in the little tuxedo.
Taiwanese people always seem to be impressed by my eyes. Whenever I take my glasses off, it causes problems. So I don't take them off very often. Whenever members from areas I served in talk about me, they call me the "short one with the big stomach." (nage ai ai, duzi da da de nage.) I claim that its happened while I've been here, but a member looked at my Japan photos on facebook, and said I had the stomach back then as well. Meh. I have goals to lose it before I leave Taiwan. I was wondering if you could help me. Could you look up the physical requirements for being in the Air Force? How fast to run a mile, how many push ups, etc. I figured that would be a good standard.
One question: I was wondering if I could buy I pipa, or a Chinese lute. Its a classical Chinese instrument, I think it would be really unique to bring home with me, and they say that if I can play guitar, I can pick it up pretty quickly. It will probably cost as much as the translater I bought, the cheapest is about 250 American dollars. Its not cheap, but it would be pretty special. If you want to know what it is, look on wikipedia or google. Let me know what you think.
I love my family! You're absolutely right, no matter what choices some of them may make, our family is very supportive and loving. I just hope to see them all in the temple, that's all.
I love the gospel. I've been learning about Family History work, its part of the training program for new missionaries. I'm starting to recognize the connection between the Spirit of Elijah and the Gathering of Israel. You probably know more about it than I do.
Dad, could you do me a favor? I don't seem to have my line of Priesthood authority, I've looked for it. Could you send me a copy, or email it? Thanks.
I love you, I'm so grateful for this wonderful opportunity you have given me, and that the Lord has given me.
-Elder Travis Leatham
