Started our day at Pot Belly for breakfast. We all found something we liked and it was very tasty. We made the decision that we would eat there every morning. I know boring, but it was really good, and convenient.
We were off to The Library of Congress or Thomas Jefferson Building. It was very cool. It is always fun to go somewhere and recognize it because of a movie or something you have seen or read. That was the experience with this building.
When we were leaving the Library we heard Travis say to someone, "hey, were from Utah". He then starting talking to this man. It was Utah's Representative Jim Matheson. He was on his way in to talk to a group from the U of U. He wanted to make sure we were able to get a tour of the Capitol which we were actually just heading to.
Supreme Court Building
LeeAnn and Kim have a family in their ward that there son is going to school in Washington and is working for Senator Hatch. He was willing to give us a back door tour of the Capitol. We met Tristan at his office and then headed through the under ground tunnels to the Capitol. He moved us quickly through the multitude of students and we were able to go to the front of the movie line.
Underground Subway
This statue from the Island originally came naked. It was sent back and when it returned it was covered in Gold covering what needed to be covered.
Used to be front entrance until it was enlarged.
Tomb made for Presidents but none of the deceased are using it.
Dome
Old Senate Chambers
This was supposed to be the front door originally.
After the Capitol tour we were starved so we headed back to Union Station to find food. It also had started to rain rather hard. We ate at Roti Mediterranean Grill which was fabulous food. After that we split up from LeeAnn and Kim. The three of us, after a short stop at a store, decided to head to the Natural Museum of American History. It was amazing. I was enjoying it so much that I completely forgot about taking any pictures. Except the one below of the Sun Stone from the Nauvoo Temple.
We met up with Kim and LeeAnn for dinner and tried to go to The Founding Fathers for dinner. It was packed with a two hour waiting list. We opted for Johnny Rockets. Wade and Travis walked back to the hotel while I went with Kim and LeeAnn and took the Metro.
Thursday May , 2014
We did start our day out again at Pot Belly. I know pretty boring but it was really good. That morning we headed to the Holacost Museum. We spent the entire morning and part of the afternoon there and could have spent several more to read everything and see everything. It was a very sobering experience.
We were able to hear Bob Behr a survivor of the Holocaust speak to us. He talked about having to transport dead bodies for burial then working laying railroad tracks and then he was put to work in the camp's kitchen. To protect his parents from deportation to the gas chamber he volunteered to work on the new SS headquarters at Wulkow.
After you exit the main museum exhibit this it what you come to.
We ate at the museum cafeteria and then headed to Engraving and Printing Building. There, of course, was a line so we got tickets to come back at 5 p.m. Kim and LeeAnn headed one way and the three of us headed another. We went to the National Archives and, yes, the line was long. We waited in the line for a while and it did not move at all so we headed to the Natural History Museum.
Hope Diamond
We had not yet walked over to the Jefferson Monument so after the museum that is where we headed. It was close to 5 but we wanted to go to the monument more than the Printing and Engraving.
Travis had wanted a good fish dinner since we had left on our trip. He found a fish place, he said was close, so we headed in the direction he said. We were basically walking right next to the freeway. I have to be honest it made incredibly uncomfortable. I kept asking if he really knew where we were headed. We had followed him before with his phone GPS in Taiwan and had gone in circles and gotten lost. Okay, it really was not that far and we did come to an area right by the water front that had several places that were selling fish dinners. We truly were the only white people there. I have never felt so out of place in my life. We ordered, got our food, but there was no place to sit and eat it. Most of the customers ordered and got in there cars and left. So we headed back to Cherry Blossom lane and found a little eating area and ate there. Travis picked a good place for dinner because it really was delicious. We then headed back to the Hotel.
We found out that LeeAnn and Kim had also walked to the Jefferson Memorial and then they walked back to the Shake Shack for their dinner. They brought Travis back a Shake. Wade wanted to a treat so he and Travis headed to Fro-Zen-Yo.
