Dear Mom and Dad,
TYPHOON DAY!!! Honestly, its not very interesting for the time being. It rains on and off and is pretty windy outside. And thats about it. There is a potential of flooding and stuff, we'll see if it gets any worse. Basically, it means we can't go on any crazy adventures today. We get to stay in town, take naps, write letters, etc. I know, pretty tough.
The post office here sells these really convienent cards that you can send to people, so I bought ten of those. So I'm sending cards to all the people who have written me. I'm repenting!!! I'll try to do better, even if I only have time to write short letters. My problem is I spend a lot of time on each letter.
SO Elder Boud's friends sent him jerky. How did they do this? They purchased a panda from build-a-bear, and what did they stuff it with? Yeah, that's right. I was wondering if maybe you could send some nuts or something. I don't dare say anything more. ;)
My Zone Leader is Jeff Peterson, and apparently he lived somewhere in our neighborhood when he was little, but now lives in South Jordan. Did you know any Petersons? Just thought I'd ask.
So last night I ate fish with a drunk man in his boxers. Thats what I had for sunday dinner. Haha! We're actually meeting with his son, the son is pretty cool and seems really sad about his dad. The father is a mess, his wife left him so he gets wasted everyday and talks about killing himself. We're trying to help him change his life and be an example for his son. We promised we would eat dog meat if he doesn't drink alcohol the next time we meet. The things we do for inviting others to come unto Christ. Its really a lot easier to obey the commandments on a mission, not that I'm perfect or anything. Its easy to see the consequences of sin.
By the way, the fish was super good. My area is well known for fish, so theres a bunch of nice sea food restaraunts in my area. All of them, of course, are out of my price range. So we have to get it when we can.
One thing interesting about my area, because we have no sisters in the area, we teach men and women. Its a little trickier, because there are rules about what situations we are allowed to teach in, and we have to be careful about what we can or cannot say. We have a few pretty cool investigators right now who are girls, it'll be interesting to see them progress. I do have one recent convert who is a girl. We're given a sheet every movecall with all of our Recent Converts and their information, so we can write them. So far, I have seven from Tainan and one from here in Donggang, soon to be a few more. I have a goal of writing them every movecall, so my characters have definitely improved.
How is my Chinese? Good question. I can do pretty good in lessons, most my vocabulary is, obviously, gospel related. There is a few other subjects I can get by in. I can ask about school, order some food, stuff like that. My directions, as always, are lacking, and if I go into a doctor's office, post office, or an electronic store, I'm done for. I've heard my Chinese is decent for the movecall I am on, but thats not an excuse to keep trying. I'm doing a little more with characters and with making examples for lessons. I'm also studying a handful of words that I need to use all the time, but never know how to say. I've been suprised on the random conversations I can understand. The gift of tongues is not understanding every word, its being able to interpret a meaning. For example, someone yesterday said "Word of Wisdom blahblahblahblah Soccer blahblahblahblah Airplane blah blahblahblahblah Cannibalism blahblahblah." And I knew he was talking about the soccer team that crashed in the Andes, and his concern was if eating human flesh when you're in a situation like that is against the word of wisdom. Interesting how it works.
Well, thats about it. For Itunes, theres a box on the left that has lists of playlists. You can create a new playlist and click and drag songs from the library, and drop them into the playlist. Then, when you are in the window for the playlist, there will be a button on the bottom that will let you burn the playlist onto a CD, as long as the playlist is under 80 minutes. If you can't figure it out, don't worry about it. I'll take what I can get. hahaha!
I love you both very much. I pray for the family often, I'm always concerned how everyone is doing. Make sure to tell Colby "GONGXI GONGXI!" I want an invitation!
Love,
Elder Travis Leatham
