October 10, 2011 Email

Dear Mom and Dad,
Happy 10 10 Day! Its Taiwan's national holiday! There was a big military parade in Taibei, and a lot of fireworks. I got a BBQ out of it, so fine with me. Its really special, because its the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China. So everyone's pretty happy.
My companion is great! His name is Elder Li, he'll be with me for another few days. He's a return missionary, served in Taibei, and lives in my ward. So he knows what he's doing. I'm really greatful for his help, he's helping me take care of things that Taizhong missionaries are not as good at, such as organizing the area book and building ward relations. He'll be with me until Wednesday, and then, who knows? Everything will work out in the next few weeks.
Man, I really miss being able to talk about politics. I've learned a little bit about the political parties here, but obviously, I can't discuss it very much. Things will be interesting when the Republicans actually nominate someone, but that's still going to be a few months. Either Perry or Romney could win, but Romney will have to be a little bolder, or Perry will need to be a little more cautious. Obama just needs to pray that everybody finds a job in the next year. Haha! Anyways, I'm more curious what will happen with the congress. I figure the house will stay with the Republicans, the senate definitely could swing to the GOP as well. We'll see what the statistics say, Sounds like everyone will lose their job, but I doubt that actually happens.
I really enjoyed conference. I liked all the talks, but I had a few favorites. I was really touched by Sis. Elaine Dalton's talk, it makes me think how I can prepare to be a good father. I really loved the advice of Elder Scott, I've started memorizing scriptures, and its been a great blessing. Pres. Monson was great of course, he definitely focused on the need of priesthood holders to repent and be clean. That really hit me, because I'm definitely not living my full potential. I have a new desire to consider my actions and repent.
A few talks reminded me of you. Eld. Anderson reminded me of our family situation, and I really feel that our family was blessed, even if it wasn't in the way you expected. I also liked Elder Holland's talk. Mom, Dad, when are you turning in your mission papers? We've really been blessed by Heavenly Father, how great would it be to have a couple more missionaries from our family to thank Him? Let me know when you plan on leaving.
Well, times up. Love you! Have a great one!
-Elder Travis Leatham
